More about this artwork

"," painted in 1897 by Norwegian artist Thorvald Erichsen, is a serene depiction of rural life set against a vibrant natural backdrop. This painting captures a tranquil scene of a traditional Scandinavian farm, nestled within a lush, rolling landscape. The artwork features a large, ruddy farmhouse with a steep roof, which takes center stage, surrounded by other farm buildings. The positioning and structure of these buildings suggest functionality and simplicity characteristic of rural Nordic architecture in the late 19th century. In the foreground, a small patchwork of fields and fences adds depth and texture, evoking the daily labors and pastoral lifestyle of the farm's inhabitants.Beyond the immediate farmstead, the landscape unfolds in layers of verdant green hills and dales, leading the viewer's eye toward a serene lake that mirrors the sky. The mountains, cloaked in darker hues, rise in the distance, suggesting the rugged terrain that typifies the Scandinavian countryside. Above it all, the sky is a canvas of creamy clouds and light, hinting at the transient beauty of an early evening.Erichsen's use of muted, earthy tones and broad, confident brushstrokes imbues the painting with a sense of calm and permanence. His skill in rendering the interplay of light and shadow across the varied textures of foliage, water, and architecture contributes to a lively yet peaceful atmosphere.Through "Landscape with an Old Farm," Thorvald Erichsen not only showcases his mastery of landscape painting but also offers a window into the serene, enduring essence of rural Norway at the turn of the 20th century.

Thorvald Erichsen was a Norwegian Post-Impressionist painter; primarily known for landscapes and still lifes.

Thorvald Erichsen was born in Trondheim, Norway. He was the son of Ernst Erichsen (1820-1869) and Trine Jensine Rian (1829-1884). Erichsen's father was a confectioner and died when Erichsen was very young.

Although at first he wanted to be a pianist, in 1886 he began studying law, then dropped out and attended a painting school run by Knud Bergslien, where he completed a course in arts and crafts. He later moved to Copenhagen, where he became a student of Christian Zahrtmann, who had a greater influence on his artistic development.
