More about this artwork

Lucien Pissarro's artwork "Jong meisje" presents a serene yet expressive portrait of a young girl seated, possibly in contemplation or a moment of rest. Created in 1887, this black and white ink drawing exemplifies Pissarro's skillful use of line and form, harnessing the simplicity of monochrome to convey depth and character. In the drawing, the girl is depicted wearing a loose-fitting dress and a softly draped hat, characteristics typical of late 19th-century attire. Her pose is relaxed but posture upright, suggesting a blend of casual ease and youthful formality. The artist uses bold, dynamic lines to shape the figure and her surroundings, while finer strokes detail her facial expression and the texture of her dress. The background, though minimalist, features vertical lines that resemble wooden paneling, creating a subtle contrast to the softer contours of the girl’s figure. These elements together enhance the subject's presence, drawing the viewer's focus squarely on her. With "Jong meisje," Pissarro not only captures the timeless beauty of youth but also reflects the artistic transition of the period, blending traditional portraiture with emerging modernist influences.
