More about this artwork
"Marseilles Quay By Night" is a vibrant painting by the Russian artist Konstantin Alexeevich Korovin, created in 1897. This artwork captures the energetic and colorful atmosphere of a bustling quay in Marseille during nighttime. The painting is characterized by its loose and expressive brushstrokes, which convey the shimmering light and the lively mood of the port. The scene is illuminated by a fusion of natural and artificial light, creating a play of colors that reflects on the cobblestone pavement and the busy figures moving about. The left side of the composition features tall city buildings under the night sky, their windows glowing softly, adding depth and intrigue to the urban landscape.Foregrounding the scene, various people go about their activities: some seem to be vendors with their carts, others stroll or gather around the quay, depicted in swift and blurry motions that suggest the fleeting moments of nighttime hustle. The overall ambiance is one of dynamic movement and a certain romantic charm typical of port cities.Through "Marseilles Quay By Night," Korovin masterfully portrays not just a physical location but the spirit of Marseille—lively, enchanting, and ever in motion.

Konstantin Alekseyevich Korovin was a leading Russian Impressionist painter.
Konstantin was born in Moscow to a merchant family officially registered as "peasants of Vladimir Gubernia". His father, Aleksey Mikhailovich Korovin, earned a university degree and was more interested in arts and music than in the family business established by Konstantin's grandfather.
