More about this artwork

Anton Mauve's "Paard in een stal bij een open staldeur" (Horse in a Stable by an Open Stable Door) is a mesmerizing painting that offers a glimpse of tranquil barn life in the late 19th century. This work, crafted with delicate strokes and a subdued palette, features a solitary grey horse standing in the soft light that filters through an open stable door. The composition is simple yet evocative, highlighting Mauve's ability to capture both the texture of the rustic wooden interiors and the gentle presence of the horse. This scene is further animated by the inclusion of a few chickens pecking at the ground and a cat seated on a cart, adding life and depth to the barn's interior. The naturalistic representation of light and shadow plays across the surfaces, enhancing the serene atmosphere. Mauve’s skilled use of washes suggests the fleeting quality of light and the quiet mood of the stable. This painting not only showcases Mauve's talent for depicting animals but also reflects his deep appreciation for the beauty found in everyday scenes.

Anthonij "Anton" Rudolf Mauve (18 September 1838 – 5 February 1888) was a Dutch realist painter who was a leading member of the Hague School. He signed his paintings 'A. Mauve' or with a monogrammed 'A.M.'. A master colorist, he was a very significant early influence on his cousin-in-law Vincent van Gogh.

His best-known paintings depict peasants working in the fields. His paintings of flocks of sheep were especially popular with American patrons, so popular that a price differential developed between scenes of "sheep coming" and "sheep going".
