More about this artwork
"Allegory of Sleep," crafted by the celebrated artist Hans Zatzka, is a mesmerizing painting that transports viewers into the mystical realm of slumber. This captivating artwork is imbued with ethereal warmth and an intriguing blend of serenity and fantasy. The painting depicts a tranquil scene: two figures are enveloped in a deep, gentle sleep in a magical forest setting, their bodies relaxed and draped in diaphanous, rose-colored fabric. Their peaceful repose is vividly colorful, offset by the dark, rich tones of the nighttime backdrop. Surrounding them are ethereal figures—angels or spirits, perhaps—who float delicately, adding to the scene’s fantastical quality. These spirits seem to be interacting with or watching over the sleeping figures, contributing to the ambiance of protection and tranquility. The moon casts a soft, silvery light over the scene, enhancing the dreamlike quality of the painting. A lute, abandoned and lying on a bed of fallen flowers and leaves in the foreground, suggests a lullaby’s last notes trailing into silence. A single candle, glowing on the far right, adds a touch of warmth to the nocturnal atmosphere, symbolizing perhaps the enduring vigilance of the night. The exquisite blend of colors, the detailed rendering of the ethereal beings, and the overall composition merge to create a visual ode to the power of sleep, dreams, and the mystical forces that watch over us as we rest.

Hans Zatzka (8 March 1859 – 17 December 1945 or 1949) was an Austrian Academic and fantasy painter. He has sometimes been known as P. Ronsard, Pierre de Ronsard, or H. Zabateri, and signed many of his works as Joseph Bernard, J. Bernard, or Bernard Zatzka. The purpose of Zatzka's vast array of pseudonyms was to avoid penalties of breaking contracts which limited the amount of artwork he could sell. This has caused some art databases to conflate Zatzka's work under the pseudonym Joseph Bernard with the French sculptor with the same name.
