More about this artwork

Welcome to our online gallery, where we are thrilled to showcase "Zwei Frauen" (ca. 1930) by Karl Wiener, a captivating piece reflecting the artistic currents of early 20th-century Europe. This evocative painting portrays two women, each depicted in a distinct style that suggests a blend of intimacy and detachment. In "Zwei Frauen," viewers see one woman from the back, her posture suggesting motion and direction. Clad in a simple yet elegant dress, she walks towards a realm that remains unseen to us, possibly a metaphor for the personal or the mysterious aspects of life’s journey. The other woman faces the viewer directly, her gaze bold and engaging, almost challenging. Her attire, adorned with the word 'MAUUS,' adds enigmatic layers to her identity and to the painting's overall mystery.Wiener’s use of monochromatic shades interlaced with textural contrasts imbues the piece with a profound depth that beckons the viewer to look closer. The dark, textured background contrasts sharply with the striking clarity of the women, highlighting the figures while also enveloping them in an air of solemnity and intrigue."Zwei Frauen" is not only a visualization of unique stylistic techniques but also a compelling narrative tableau that invites interpretations and reflections on identity, perspective, and the enigmatic nature of human connection.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
