More about this artwork
"The Cardiff Team (1913)" by Robert Delaunay is a vivid and dynamic painting that captures the energy and movement of a rugby match. This masterpiece was painted during what is known as Delaunay’s "The Cardiff Team" series, which centered on the rugby games popular in Paris at the time.In this painting, Delaunay employs his signature style of Orphism, marked by a vibrant color palette and a sense of movement through disjointed forms. The scene features a cluster of rugby players in the midst of a game, their bodies overlapping and intersecting in a flurry of activity. The prominent figure in the foreground reaches upwards, perhaps in an attempt to catch or throw the ball, showcasing the physicality and intensity of the sport. The background adds a layer of modernity with fragmented geometric shapes and contrasting colors that suggest the urban environment. Notably, there’s a partial depiction of a Ferris wheel, which, along with bold fragments of advertisements, conveys the excitement and the bustling atmosphere of a fair or sporting event."The Cardiff Team (1913)" is a celebration of movement, color, and modern life, making it a remarkable example of early 20th-century European avant-garde painting.
