More about this artwork

The Spire of Notre-Dame (View of Paris, Notre-Dame) by Robert Delaunay is a stunning example of the Orphism movement, characterized by its bold colors and fragmented forms. Painted between 1909 and 1914, this artwork captures the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris through a distinctly modern lens.Delaunay's depiction is a dazzling blend of abstract shapes and vibrant hues, emphasizing movement and light rather than realistic detail. The central figure of the painting, the spire of Notre-Dame, pierces the composition with its dynamic, elongated form, stretching vertically from the lower center to the top of the canvas. Around and beneath the spire, creamy blues, gentle purples, and leafy greens suggest the cityscape and the river Seine, abstracted into swirling, fluid shapes. An arc of a rainbow adds dramatic color, arching over the scene with layers of red, orange, and yellow, contrasting sharply with the more subdued colors of the sky and urban landscape. This element is not only visually striking but also echoes the themes of unity and harmony that are key to Delaunay's artistic philosophy.Delaunay’s innovative style invites viewers to experience the urban landscape through an otherworldly prism, distorting and reassembling the familiar into something entirely new and profoundly evocative.
