More about this artwork

"Maruru (Thank You)" is a striking woodcut print created by the French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin between 1894 and 1895. This piece derives from Gauguin's profoundly influential period in Tahiti, a time when he immersed himself into the local culture and landscape; aspects that deeply infused his art.The woodcut presents a captivating scene steeped in Tahitian motifs and symbolism. The central figure, noticeably larger than the others, exudes a mystical aura, depicted with an elongated body and stylized facial features that are both intriguing and enigmatic. Two smaller figures appear engaged in daily activities, suggesting a narrative of local life or spiritual practices. The standing figure on the left faces a creature, possibly a bird, perched on a branch, linking human to nature. To the right, another figure kneels by what seems to be a weaving loom, an activity significant in Tahitian culture. The consistent use of bold contrasts between black and white enhances the dramatic and somewhat ethereal quality of the scene. These stark differences not only highlight the central figures and their activities but also skillfully emphasize the undulating forms and fluidity typical of Gauguin's work."Maruru," meaning "thank you" in Tahitian, suggests themes of gratitude or tribute, possibly reflecting Gauguin's appreciation for the island and its people who inspired much of his later work.

Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin was a French Post-Impressionist artist. Unappreciated until after his death, Gauguin is now recognized for his experimental use of color and Synthetist style that were distinct from Impressionism. Toward the end of his life, he spent ten years in French Polynesia. The paintings from this time depict people or landscapes from that region.
