More about this artwork
"A Herdess with Cows on a Country Road in the Rain" is a compelling watercolor work by Dutch artist Anton Mauve, painted sometime between 1848 and 1888. This painting captures a quietly evocative scene of rural life under the shadow of a dreary sky, a tribute to the simplicity and the enduring spirit of the agrarian lifestyle. In the painting, a herdswoman, sheltered by a dark blue umbrella, guides her cattle along a muddy country road. The rain casts a silvery sheen across the scene, reflected subtly on the wet road surface and the animals' coats, enhancing the feeling of dampness and the chill in the air. The cows, rendered in earthy tones of white, black, and brown, plod along faithfully, their heads lowered against the rain. The artist's use of muted, washed-out colors conveys the dreariness of the rainy day and sets a mood of perseverance amidst gloom. Mauve's skill in capturing the reflections on the wet road and the subtle distinctions in the gray sky shows his mastery in using watercolors to depict not just physical appearances but atmospheric conditions as well.Anton Mauve is known for his realist landscapes and scenes of rural labor, often highlighting the unembellished beauty and the harsh realities of peasant life.

Anthonij "Anton" Rudolf Mauve (18 September 1838 – 5 February 1888) was a Dutch realist painter who was a leading member of the Hague School. He signed his paintings 'A. Mauve' or with a monogrammed 'A.M.'. A master colorist, he was a very significant early influence on his cousin-in-law Vincent van Gogh.
His best-known paintings depict peasants working in the fields. His paintings of flocks of sheep were especially popular with American patrons, so popular that a price differential developed between scenes of "sheep coming" and "sheep going".
