More about this artwork

Welcome to our exploration of "Prismes-23" by Emile-Allain Séguy, a striking work steeped in the bold aesthetics of 1931. This piece is a vivid example of Séguy's talent for blending natural inspiration with an Art Deco flair, marked by its geometric precision and vibrant palette. At first glance, "Prismes-23" captivates the viewer with its dynamic composition of crystalline forms that seem to burst forth from the canvas, radiating energy and motion. The artwork features two central figures, reminiscent of exploding stars or floral blossoms, constructed from sharply angled, prism-like shards. These forms are laid out against a backdrop of alternating maroon and mustard stripes, enhancing the visual impact through stark color contrasts and rhythmic patterning. Each crystal shard is meticulously detailed, showcasing varying tones and textures that suggest depth and complexity. The colors chosen by Séguy—a mix of earthy browns, creamy whites, and bold yellows—are harmonious yet assertive, creating a sense of warmth and earthiness that grounds the otherwise ethereal composition."Prismes-23" invites viewers to ponder the interplay between the natural world and human interpretation, a theme often revisited in Séguy's work. This painting not only reflects the technological optimism of the early 20th century but also exemplifies the period's ongoing fascination with structure, symmetry, and the boundaries of abstract art.

Emile-Allain Séguy was a popular French designer throughout the Art Deco and Art Nouveau movements of the 1920s. Often confused with the French entomologist Eugene Séguy who was active during the same time period, E.A. Séguy designed primarily patterns and textiles and was heavily influenced by the natural world. He was particularly fond of the intricate patterns and beauty of insects (Eugene would have approved), which he saw as “mechanic wonders” that provided abundant inspiration for interior design (Schiff, 157).
