More about this artwork
Dive into the serene calm and intricate beauty of "Italienne au Tambourin" (Italian Woman with a Tambourine), a striking oil painting created by the acclaimed French artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau in 1869. This artwork is a superb example of Bouguereau's mastery in capturing human emotion and his penchant for romanticized portrayals of peasant life. The painting features a young Italian woman, her gaze both tranquil and piercing, drawing viewers into a moment of silent interaction. Adorned with an elaborately decorative golden necklace and matching earrings that elegantly complement her dark flowing hair, the woman epitomizes the rustic yet graceful allure often highlighted in Bouguereau's subjects. She holds a tambourine delicately along its rim, adding a musical element that suggests a vibrancy to her otherwise still pose.Dressed in traditional attire, her white blouse and crimson sleeves suggest a simplicity that contrasts profoundly with her richly detailed jewelry, creating a visual representation of Bouguereau's interest in the everyday lives of common folk infused with a classical dignity and beauty.Set against a backdrop of muted greens and browns, the figure stands out compellingly, her fair complexion and the crisp white of her blouse illuminated under an unseen light source, emphasizing her serene expression and the fine details of her attire."Italienne au Tambourin" not only showcases Bouguereau's skills in realistic texture and nuanced shadow but also his ability to convey deep narratives through portraiture.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter. In paintings of the realistic genre, he used mythological themes, modern interpretation of classical themes, emphasizing the female human body. During his lifetime, he achieved great popularity in France and the United States, was awarded many official honors, and sold his works for top prices. In the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art disappeared from the public eye, partly due to its changing artistic tastes. A resurgence of interest in figurative painting in the 1980s led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He completed 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
