More about this artwork
"Explore a peaceful moment in the countryside with Anton Mauve’s evocative painting, _Shepherdess with a Flock of Sheep_. Created between 1870 and 1888, this artwork captures the serene life of a young shepherdess as she watches over her flock. Mauve's masterful use of soft, muted tones and delicately detailed brushwork immerses the viewer in a misty, lush landscape. In the foreground, the shepherdess stands resolutely with her staff, her attention fixed on the sheep that huddle closely together, their wool blending into a soft sea of gray and white. A loyal dog walks beside her, suggesting a scene of daily routine in rural life, marked by a harmonious relationship between the herder, the animals, and nature itself. The background features a grove of sparsely leafed trees, enveloped by a gentle fog that sets a dreamy, almost ethereal mood. This painting not only celebrates the quiet dignity of pastoral life but also showcases Mauve’s skill in creating atmospheric depth and texture. It’s a gentle reminder of the timeless bond between humans and nature, portrayed through the simple yet profound act of tending to a flock.

Anthonij "Anton" Rudolf Mauve (18 September 1838 – 5 February 1888) was a Dutch realist painter who was a leading member of the Hague School. He signed his paintings 'A. Mauve' or with a monogrammed 'A.M.'. A master colorist, he was a very significant early influence on his cousin-in-law Vincent van Gogh.
His best-known paintings depict peasants working in the fields. His paintings of flocks of sheep were especially popular with American patrons, so popular that a price differential developed between scenes of "sheep coming" and "sheep going".
