More about this artwork
"Profile Portrait of a Young Woman" by Hans Zatzka is a captivating artwork that gracefully captures the delicate beauty and ethereal essence of its subject. In this painting, we see a young woman depicted in profile, turning slightly towards the viewer with a gentle smile. Her features are finely rendered, hinting at a blend of innocence and mild curiosity. The artist uses a warm color palette to illuminate her complexion, with soft hues of browns and creams that complement the subtle shadows playing across her face. Her hair, elegantly styled in an updo, adds to the demure elegance that characterizes the portrait. The background, rendered in loose, impressionistic strokes of teal and ochre, provides a subtle contrast that enhances the subject’s figure without overshadowing her. This choice of a muted yet expressive backdrop allows Zatzka to draw the viewer’s focus immediately to the young woman's facial expression and fine details of her attire.Lightly draped in what appears to be a sheer shawl, her shoulders are softly highlighted, adding a textural dimension that conveys both the softness and vulnerability of youth.

Hans Zatzka (8 March 1859 – 17 December 1945 or 1949) was an Austrian Academic and fantasy painter. He has sometimes been known as P. Ronsard, Pierre de Ronsard, or H. Zabateri, and signed many of his works as Joseph Bernard, J. Bernard, or Bernard Zatzka. The purpose of Zatzka's vast array of pseudonyms was to avoid penalties of breaking contracts which limited the amount of artwork he could sell. This has caused some art databases to conflate Zatzka's work under the pseudonym Joseph Bernard with the French sculptor with the same name.
