More about this artwork

Featured in our exhibition is Charles Demuth’s enigmatic watercolor, "Bermuda Landscape No. 1," dated 1917. This painting is a splendid example of Demuth’s early exploration into the realms of abstraction, which later became a defining feature of his artistic style. At first glance, the viewer might be drawn to the soft hues and gentle interplay of geometric shapes and architectural forms. Demuth’s composition is largely dominated by a fragmented structure in the center, possibly a stylized representation of a building. Complementing this central motif are various forms that suggest elements of a serene landscape, with hints of sky, clouds, or greenery softly blending into the background. The inclusion of circular and arch-like figures adds a dynamic contrast to the sharper lines of the geometric shapes, evoking a sense of balance and movement. With its muted palette of blues, oranges, and earth tones, Demuth captures a certain subtlety that invites contemplation. This piece is reflective of his time spent in Bermuda, where the island's luminous environment deeply impacted his artistic expression. "Bermuda Landscape No. 1" not only showcases Demuth’s mastery of watercolor but also exemplifies his unique ability to convey complex, abstract visions inspired by natural landscapes.

Charles Demuth (1883-1935) was one of the leading artists during the American Modernism era. He was distinguished for intimate watercolors and cubic architectural paintings. Demuth studied art at Académie Julian in Paris, where he was welcomed into the avant-garde art scene and met other American Cubism artists like Marsden Hartley. His watercolor figures have a weightless and surrealistic character with a sensitive linear style, in which he illustrated plays and novels such as Émile Zola's Nana. He also depicted an evolving gay scene of encounters at bath houses through watercolors for his close friends, like the "Turkish Bath", works that now are of great historical significance. Demuth later employed a cubist technique by painting industrial factories with complex structural planes, leading him to becoming a pioneer for the precisionist movement.
