More about this artwork

Ferdinand Hodler's painting "Ergriffenheit," painted in 1900, is an excellent example of the Symbolist movement's embrace of emotion and the expressive power of art. The painting features a woman immersed in a lush, green landscape, standing barefoot on a soft pink ground. The background is marked by rolling green hills and speckled with subtle pink flowers, contributing to a serene yet emotionally charged atmosphere. The subject is captured in a moment of profound emotional engagement, with her arms crossed over her chest and her hands gripping her shoulders. Her eyes are turned away, suggesting introspection or overcoming by deep feelings. The flowy blue dress envelops her figure, enhancing the sense of movement and emotion. Hodler's use of vivid colors and bold contours emphasizes the emotional intensity of the woman's state."Ergriffenheit" roughly translates to "Emotion" or "Being Deeply Moved," which perfectly encapsulates the essence of this work. Hodler’s technique and the intense expression in the subject's posture bring the internal experience of the woman to life, allowing viewers to contemplate the deeper meanings of emotional expression and human experience.

Ferdinand Hodler (March 14, 1853 – May 19, 1918) was one of the best-known Swiss painters of the nineteenth century. His early works were portraits, landscapes, and genre paintings in a realistic style. Later, he adopted a personal form of symbolism which he called "parallelism".
