More about this artwork
This painting captures the ethereal beauty of a Norwegian landscape at night, created by the talented artist Anna Boberg. Known for her powerful and dynamic scenes of nature, Boberg often drew inspiration from the rugged beauty of the Lofoten Islands. 'Night over Store Molla: Study from Lofoten' is a prime example of her passion and mastery in landscape painting. The artwork portrays the serene yet majestic setting of Store Molla, one of the islands in the Lofoten archipelago. The focus is on the dramatic mountain ranges whose peaks are subtly bathed in the soft glow of moonlight, reflecting a mesmerizing spectrum of pinks and whites. These majestic elements rise sharply against the muted, dark blues of the night sky and ocean, creating a striking contrast.Foreground elements, comprising of dark and textured rocks at the water’s edge, seem to emerge from the shadows, adding depth and mystery to the scene. The subdued lighting and the varying shades of blue evoke a quiet, introspective mood that Boberg has so deftly managed to encapsulate. This painting not only showcases her unique ability to blend colors but also demonstrates her skill in using light to conjure atmosphere and emotion.

Anna Katarina Boberg (1864 – 1935) was a Swedish artist married to prominent architect Ferdinand Boberg. Boberg was a person of many artistic pursuits; initially she worked with ceramics and textiles and besides painting she also worked with set design and writing. She was of an artistic family, but never received any formal training in the arts, and is considered an autodidact. Many of her paintings are of northern Norway, which became Boberg's main focus for many years after a trip there in 1901. These works were not received very well in Sweden, but did much better in Paris. Boberg spent a great deal of time in the area near Lofoten in Norway, where she eventually had a cabin, and she made many of those trips on her own.
