More about this artwork

"Morning Ride along the Beach" is a captivating painting by the Dutch artist Anton Mauve, completed in 1876. This masterful work illustrates a serene morning on a spacious beach, where a group of riders gently guides their horses along the shore. In Mauve's painting, the viewer's attention is drawn towards three main figures, each mounted on a horse – the sandy tones of the beach contrasting beautifully against the muted colors of the horse's coats and the riders' attire. The rider in the foreground moves away from the viewer on a graceful white horse, leading the eye into the scene, while the other two, positioned at the right, face the observer, deep in conversation. Their black and brown mounts stand out against the broad expanse of the light-colored sand, adding depth and dimension to the scene. The tranquil atmosphere is enhanced by the subtle details of the distant horizon where the sea meets the sky, along with faint figures of other beachgoers and small, characteristic beach huts. The painting exudes a sense of quiet motion and the peaceful bond between human and animal, underlined by the vast, open space around them which suggests an intimate closeness with nature.Anton Mauve's skillful use of light and shadow, together with his restrained yet expressive color palette, encapsulates a timeless moment of leisure and harmony.

Anthonij "Anton" Rudolf Mauve (18 September 1838 – 5 February 1888) was a Dutch realist painter who was a leading member of the Hague School. He signed his paintings 'A. Mauve' or with a monogrammed 'A.M.'. A master colorist, he was a very significant early influence on his cousin-in-law Vincent van Gogh.

His best-known paintings depict peasants working in the fields. His paintings of flocks of sheep were especially popular with American patrons, so popular that a price differential developed between scenes of "sheep coming" and "sheep going".
