More about this artwork
"Cattle at Rest on a Hillside in the Alps" is a serene and evocative oil painting by the celebrated 19th century French artist Rosa Bonheur. Known for her realistic animal scenes, Bonheur captures the tranquil essence of pastoral life through this exquisite landscape work. The painting depicts three cattle, each rendered with meticulous attention to detail, lounging peacefully on a verdant mountainside. The central figure, a robust black bull, is seated with its gaze gently turned towards the viewer, its coat detailed with a tactile sense of weight and texture. Beside it, a caramel-colored cow lies placidly, its body relaxed and a gentle expression on its face. The third cow, positioned in the background, grazes quietly, blending subtly into the misty Alpine background. The backdrop is a painterly blend of soft, muted colors—a hallmark of Bonheur's style—depicting a serene Alpine landscape. The distant mountains, shrouded in mist, add a sense of depth and vastness to the scene, highlighting the peaceful isolation of the setting. The sky above, a mixture of grays and soft pinks, mimics the early morning or late afternoon light, lending an atmospheric quality to the entire composition.Rosa Bonheur's mastery in portraying domestic animals and her profound respect for nature come together harmoniously in this painting, offering viewers a moment of peace and a breath of fresh mountain air.

Rosa Bonheur, born Marie-Rosalie Bonheur, was a French artist, mostly a painter of animals (animalière) but also a sculptor, in a realist style. Her paintings include Ploughing in the Nivernais, first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1848, and now at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and The Horse Fair (in French: Le marché aux chevaux), which was exhibited at the Salon of 1853 (finished in 1855) and is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City.
