More about this artwork

"Portrait of a Woman, Probably Mrs. Price of Rugby," painted in 1835 by John Linnell, elegantly captures the dignified essence of a woman set against a subdued background. The painting reflects Linnell's mastery in creating lifelike portraits with a personal touch, suggesting the status and poise of the sitter. The subject of the painting, presumed to be Mrs. Price, is portrayed with a soft and contemplative expression, her gaze slightly averted, which adds a touch of introspection and grace to her demeanor. Her delicate features are rendered with fine brushwork, highlighting her clear eyes and well-defined brows, which complement the light and thoughtful look on her face. The warmth in her cheeks and the subtle smile playing at her lips make her appear both approachable and refined. Her hairstyle, elegantly pinned up with curls framing her face, corresponds with the fashion of the time, suggesting her awareness and adherence to contemporary styles. The dress worn by Mrs. Price is a beautiful example of 1830s fashion, featuring puffed sleeves and a low neckline that gracefully exposes her shoulders, adorned with what appears to be a floral embellishment. The fabric's texture and the light catching on its surface are depicted with a sense of depth and realism, making the attire as much a subject of admiration as the woman herself. This portrait not only showcases John Linnell's skill as a portraitist but also serves as a historical artifact, offering insights into the style and societal norms of early Victorian England. This painting invites viewers to delve into the past, pondering the life and times of Mrs.
