More about this artwork
We are delighted to present a masterpiece from the distinguished artist Pierre Joseph Redouté titled "Rosa Damascena Coccinea." Created between 1817 and 1824, this artwork epitomizes Redouté's exceptional ability to capture the delicate beauty of flowers. In this exquisite botanical illustration, a lush red rose blooms prominently against a serene background. The flower is depicted with a radiant, deep pink hue, its petals unfurling around a vivid yellow center, revealing striking details and a lifelike presence.Redouté’s attention to the subtleties of color and form brings this painting to life, making the viewer feel as though they could reach out and touch the velvety petals.Accompanying the central bloom are several dark green leaves with realistic venation, adding depth and contrast to the composition. Below the bloom, two rose hips are visible, hinting at the plant's full life cycle and the natural progression from flower to fruit. Each element in the painting is rendered with scientific accuracy, showcasing Redouté's skills as both an artist and a naturalist. This painting not only serves as a visual delight but also reflects the historical and cultural significance of the Rosa Damascena during the early 19th century, known for its use in perfumery and medicine. Redouté's work, therefore, bridges the gap between art and botany, celebrating the inherent beauty and utility of the natural world.
