More about this artwork
In the evocative piece “Kroonkaketoe,” dated 1924, Dutch artist Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita captures the dignified poise of a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo with striking depth and simplicity. This woodcut print, known for its crisp lines and bold contrasts, showcases De Mesquita's masterful skill in the graphic arts. The artwork features a solitary cockatoo rendered predominantly in black and white, situated within a narrow, rectangular frame. The bird, gripping a perch with its claws, dominates the composition, its head turned slightly to the side as if surveying its surroundings with a keen eye. The cockatoo’s distinguished crest, from which the title “Kroonkaketoe” (Dutch for "Crown Cockatoo") derives, sweeps elegantly backward in a display of fluid lines and curves, underscoring the regal nature of this bird.De Mesquita’s use of contrasting dark and light areas not only highlights the cockatoo's textured feathers but also creates an almost tangible depth, pulling the viewer into the quiet, introspective world of the bird. The thick border around the image intensifies the focus on the subject, while the minimal background ensures an undistracted admiration of the creature’s form and character."Kroonkaketoe" is not merely a portrait of a bird but a poignant expression of form, elegance, and the serene beauty inherent in nature. This work, like much of De Mesquita's art, invites viewers to pause and appreciate the subtle complexities of a seemingly simple subject.
