More about this artwork

Welcome to a serene glimpse into the natural world as imagined by the masterful Francois Boucher. Our exhibit is proud to feature one of his less commonly known but profoundly captivating works, "The Waterfalls of Tivoli", created in 1730. This delicate sketch showcases Boucher's versatility and his ability to capture the wild, untamed beauty of nature. The artwork transports viewers to the verdant outskirts of Tivoli, where cascading waterfalls tumble into rocky pools below. Boucher's use of soft, muted tones and fluid lines creates a dreamlike quality, emphasizing the misty spray of the falls and the lush foliage that surrounds them. Darker strokes outline the rugged textures of rock and water, providing a dramatic contrast to the ethereal lightness of the trees and sky.Francois Boucher, primarily known for his voluptuous and idyllic portrayals of pastoral scenes, here reflects a different aspect of his artistic genius. "The Waterfalls of Tivoli" exemplifies his skill in landscape art, where he conveys not only the physical beauty but also the sublime power of nature. The work invites the viewer to linger, to hear the rush of the water and feel the coolness of the shadowed groves.

François Boucher (1703–1770) was a French painter, engraver, illustrator and printmaker. He was a proponent of Rococo and had a huge influence in spreading the style throughout Europe. His art was idyllic and voluptuous with a high-toned palette of blues and pinks. He created designs for all decorative arts, porcelains and tapestries. Boucher also painted several portraits including his patroness Madame de Pompadour. He is one of the most celebrated decorative artists of the 18th century.
