More about this artwork

Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita's 1920 etching "Roos" captures the timeless beauty and delicate intricacies of a blooming rose. This stunning work, steeped in contrast and detail, demonstrates de Mesquita's exceptional skill in the art of printmaking. The composition places the rose at the center, freshly bloomed and depicted in striking detail. Each petal is carefully rendered, suggesting the velvety texture and the gentle curves of the natural form. The rose stands out against a dark, dramatically shaded background, which serves to highlight its form and the light shining upon it.Surrounding the flower is a unique, ruffled border that adds an almost ornamental frame to the central image. This not only emphasizes the rose's natural symmetry and perfection but also adds a layer of visual interest that invites the viewer to delve deeper into the artwork."Roos" is a testament to de Mesquita's mastery in capturing the essence of his subjects, transforming an everyday sight into a piece of art that resonates with elegance and serenity.
