More about this artwork

In the intriguing painting titled "Self-Portrait in 17th Century Costume," created in 1889 by the renowned Finnish artist Albert Edelfelt, the artist imaginatively projects himself into the past. This stunning work reveals Edelfelt's mastery of light and color, as well as his capacity for self-expression and historical reinterpretation. In this depiction, Edelfelt is dressed in an elaborate 17th-century costume, complete with a stark white ruffled collar and golden yellow doublet embellished with buttons that gleam as if lit from within. His figure is posed boldly and directly engages the viewer, a piercing gaze emanating from beneath the shadow of a wide-brimmed, plumed hat that adds a dramatic flair to his appearance. His hand firmly grips a slender red staff that serves to guide the viewer’s eye upwards, enhancing the stately and dignified air he exudes. The painting is characterized by its vibrant yet straightforward brushwork, reflecting the artist's confidence and adeptness with his medium. The chiaroscuro technique, with its pronounced contrasts between light and shadow, enhances the volumetric strength of Edelfelt's figure and imbues the portrait with a robust, almost sculptural quality. This self-portrait not only pays homage to the grandeur of a bygone era but also reflects Edelfelt’s introspective evaluation of himself as an artist and intellectual.
