More about this artwork

This evocative painting, titled "Stéphane Mallarmé," is a remarkable work by the French painter Édouard Manet, completed in 1876. The portrait depicts the renowned French poet Stéphane Mallarmé, captured in a moment that seems both casual and introspective. Manet was known for his ability to interpret the personalities of his subjects through his unique brushwork and use of color, and this painting is a testament to that skill. In the portrait, Mallarmé is seated against a loosely brushed, almost abstract, olive-green background, which provides a stark contrast to his dark clothing. He appears to be lost in thought, looking off to the side, away from the viewer. His face is rendered with subtle intricacies that hint at a pensiveness, capturing the essence of a man often engulfed in the world of words and ideas. He is dressed in an austere black suit, and his right hand is delicately placed over a closed book, perhaps suggestive of a pause in reading or deep contemplation about his writing. The painterly execution of his hands and face displays Manet's deft handling of flesh and textiles, revealing the textures of skin and fabric with both precision and fluidity. A noteworthy aspect of the composition is the white fabric of a couch, dashed with rapid, sketch-like strokes of white and blue, suggesting an informal setting that is personal and private. This painting not only serves as a striking visual biography of Mallarmé but also illustrates the intellectual linkage between artist and poet during a vibrant period in French cultural history.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was a French modernist painter and one of the first 19th century artists to paint modern life. His impressionist style is characterized by relatively small and thin brushstrokes that create emphasis on light depiction. Manet was one of the key artists in the transition from realism to impressionism, along with Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. However, he resisted involvement in any one specific style of painting, and only presented his work to the Salon of Paris instead of impressionist exhibitions. His early masterworks, The Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia, created great controversy and served as a rallying point for other young painters.
