More about this artwork
Dive deep into the historic ambience of early 20th-century Paris with George Hendrik Breitner's "Street in Montmartre, Paris." Painted between circa 1880 and 1923, this artwork offers a raw and expressive view of a Parisian street scene that captivates with its simplicity and vigor. In this artwork, Breitner uses broad, loose brushstrokes to depict the rustic allure of Montmartre, an area renowned for its bohemian spirit. The painting features a narrow street flanked by buildings, including a prominently green house with a classic steep roof at the center, evoking the unique architectural styles of the time. The façades show signs of wear and character, suggesting the enduring life within this historic district.Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on detailed, refined representations, Breitner’s approach in this painting emphasizes texture and composition over intricate detailing. The earthy tones and limited color palette enhance the sense of an everyday moment caught in time."Street in Montmartre, Paris" not only reflects the urban landscape but also invites viewers to imagine the stories hidden behind the walls of these aging structures. It’s a brilliant example of how less can indeed be more in conveying a powerful sense of place and time.

George Hendrik Breitner (12 September 1857 – 5 June 1923) was a Dutch painter and photographer. An important figure in Amsterdam Impressionism, he is noted especially for his paintings of street scenes and harbours in a realistic style. He painted en plein air, and became interested in photography as a means of documenting street life and atmospheric effects – rainy weather in particular – as reference materials for his paintings.
