More about this artwork

"Clouds" by John Constable is a captivating depiction of the dynamic and ever-changing English skies. This painting masterfully illustrates Constable’s passion for studying and rendering the sky, which he considered 'the chief organ of sentiment' in a landscape. The expansive canvas is filled with an array of cloud formations that float gracefully across the serene blue backdrop, capturing a spectrum of moods within the natural light effects of a possibly early afternoon sky.Constable's brushwork varies across the canvas, providing texture and depth to the clouds, which appear almost tangible due to his acute attention to the nuances of color and light. The lower horizon, subtly defined, hints at a distant landscape but allows the clouds to dominate the scene, thus focusing the viewer's attention on the drama unfolding above. This piece invites viewers to explore the fluidity and transient beauty of nature, punctuating Constable’s belief in depicting the skies with emotional depth and scientific interest. It is a testament to his skill and his profound appreciation of the natural world, standing out as a fine example of British landscape painting.

John Constable RA was an English landscape painter in the Romantic tradition. Born in Suffolk, he is known principally for revolutionising the genre of landscape painting with his pictures of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home – now known as "Constable Country" – which he invested with an intensity of affection. "I should paint my own places best", he wrote to his friend John Fisher in 1821, "painting is but another word for feeling".
