More about this artwork
John Constable’s remarkable pencil sketch titled "Old Sarum at Noon" (1829) captures the serene landscape surrounding the historical site of Old Sarum in Salisbury, England. This fine artwork provides a tranquil depiction of the English countryside, characterized by the soft lines and detailed observations typical of Constable’s work.In the foreground, a shepherd, almost camouflaged within the natural surroundings, tends to his flock of sheep, thus illustrating the harmonious relationship between man and nature. The rolling fields spread out towards the horizon where Old Sarum, with its ancient earthworks and ruins, stands prominently as both a focal point and a poignant reminder of England’s rich past. The expansive sky, filled with delicate sketches of clouds, emphasizes the vastness and quietude of the landscape, projecting a sense of midday stillness. Constable's skillful use of perspective and attention to the textures of the countryside evoke a connection to the land that is both intimate and grand. This drawing is not only a beautiful representation of the rural life and historical landscapes of England but also an enduring testament to Constable's love for the natural world.

John Constable RA was an English landscape painter in the Romantic tradition. Born in Suffolk, he is known principally for revolutionising the genre of landscape painting with his pictures of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home – now known as "Constable Country" – which he invested with an intensity of affection. "I should paint my own places best", he wrote to his friend John Fisher in 1821, "painting is but another word for feeling".
