More about this artwork

We invite you to explore "Breton Village," a captivating painting by the renowned artist Odilon Redon, dating back to circa 1890. This work stands out as a serene representation of rural life in Brittany, France, characterized by Redon’s exceptional use of color and form.At first glance, the painting depicts a simple, tranquil village scene under a vast, expressive sky. The landscape is dotted with traditional Breton houses, their distinct stone structures and thatched roofs rendered in a style that seems to capture glimmers of sunlight. The subtle variations in the blue of the sky against the cream and earth tones of the buildings evoke a gentle, almost nostalgic atmosphere.Redon's technique allows the texture of the paint to enhance the rustic charm of the scene, with brushstrokes that convey both the roughness of the rural architecture and the sweeping openness of the sky. The foreground is filled with lush fields, suggesting the fertile lands of Brittany, enhancing the painting’s depth and inviting the viewer to step into this peaceful setting."Breton Village" is more than just a scenic depiction; it is an artwork rich in emotion and atmosphere, inviting contemplation on the peaceful, enduring beauty of rural life.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
