More about this artwork

Delve into the enchanting world of John Constable with his masterpiece, "Ploughing Scene in Suffolk." Created between 1824 and 1825, this painting captivates viewers with its vivid portrayal of agricultural life in the heart of Suffolk. At the core of the painting, a farmer works diligently with his team of horses, ploughing the fertile earth. The scene is set against a vast, expansive landscape that stretches out under a dramatic and swirling sky. Constable's exceptional skill in capturing the dynamic skies and the gentle undulations of the field highlights his deep connection to the English countryside. On the left, a robust tree stands prominently, its foliage tinged with the hues of autumn, suggesting the time of year when farmers prepare the land for the next growing season. The distant fields in varying shades of green and brown are dotted with grazing cattle and outlined by hedgerows and trees, showcasing the patchwork quilt-like pattern typical of the English rural landscape.Constable's use of light and shadow, combined with his attentive brushwork, enriches the texture of the clouds and the foliage, adding a lifelike quality to the scene. This painting not only reflects the physical beauty of Suffolk but also evokes the serene, rhythmic pace of countryside life."Ploughing Scene in Suffolk" offers viewers a glimpse into the 19th-century rural England, portrayed with an authenticity that only Constable, with his profound love for his native landscapes, could deliver.

John Constable RA was an English landscape painter in the Romantic tradition. Born in Suffolk, he is known principally for revolutionising the genre of landscape painting with his pictures of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home – now known as "Constable Country" – which he invested with an intensity of affection. "I should paint my own places best", he wrote to his friend John Fisher in 1821, "painting is but another word for feeling".
