More about this artwork

Odilon Redon’s “Vase of Flowers” painted in 1916, is a vibrant and colorful exploration of the beauty and transience of flowers. This masterpiece depicts a lush bouquet brimming with an assortment of flowers in a tall, narrow vase, set against a radiantly warm background that transitions from a bold yellow at the top to a softer orange and finally a deep, earthy brown at the base.Redon’s use of pastel on paper provides a dream-like quality to the work, emphasizing texture and the interplay of light and color. The flowers themselves, a mix of blooms in shades of red, purple, white, and black, seem to almost dance in their arrangement, suggesting movement and a delicate balance in their natural form. This variation in color highlights Redon’s fascination with the mystical and the subconscious. The ethereal atmosphere of the painting is enhanced by Redon's light, almost effervescent application of pastel, creating a sense of impermanence and fragility. It is a celebration not just of natural beauty but of the power of art to capture the fleeting moments of life. This painting invites viewers to pause and reflect on the beauty of nature and the transient quality of life, encouraging a moment of introspection and peace amidst the everyday.“Vase of Flowers” by Odilon Redon beautifully encapsulates his artistic transition from the dark tones and somber motifs of his earlier works to the more vibrant, light-filled palette seen here.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
