More about this artwork
We are delighted to present one of Berthe Morisot's profound contributions to Impressionism, "Baigneuse En Chemise" (1894). This painting captures the delicate essence of a solitary moment, featuring a young woman clad in a light, flowing chemise, seated against a lush, loosely brushed background of vibrant greens and soft blues.Morisot’s masterful brushstrokes give a dreamlike quality to the scene, as the bather, absorbed in her own world, appears introspective or perhaps gently occupied with a small task. The subject is positioned slightly off-center, her body gracefully curving in a relaxed pose that suggests both a moment of rest and subtle movement. The prominence of green and blue hues evokes a sense of tranquility and connection with nature, which is a recurring theme in Morisot's works.Notably, Morisot’s technique shows her expertise in dealing with light and form, using relatively few strokes to convey texture and detail, which is characteristic of the Impressionist style. The ethereal, almost tactile rendition of the chemise, along with the harmonious interplay of color and light, invites the viewer to experience the peacefulness of the moment alongside the figure. This painting not only illustrates Morisot's unique perspective and skill as a woman in the male-dominated art world of her time but also underscores her ability to convey profound emotions and narrative through subtlety and impressionistic elegance.

Landscapes and still life by French impressionist painter Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). She was celebrated for the feminine qualities of her paintings, intuitiveness, spontaneity and delicacy, and she often included her daughter Julie in her paintings. Berthe was married to the brother of Édouard Manet, and some say she was his muse, as she modeled in many of his paintings.
