More about this artwork

Johan Christian Dahl's painting, "View over Øresund near the Lime Works" (1818), masterfully captures a tranquil coastal scene with a historical backdrop. This artwork offers a serene vista of the Øresund, the strait that separates Denmark and Sweden, bustling with maritime activity featuring ships that glide gently across calm waters. The lime works, indicated by plumes of smoke and nestled by the shore, serves as a focal point and reminds viewers of the industrial activity that once thrived in this serene environment.Foregrounded in the scene, a group of figures, elegantly dressed, engages in quiet conversation, adding a layer of social interaction to the predominantly natural and industrial landscape. Their presence brings a human element to the sweeping view, connecting the spectator with the everyday life of the era. The expansive sky, filled with soft, diffused clouds, further intensifies the atmospheric mood of the painting, suggesting the transient beauty of the moment captured by Dahl.

Johan Christian Claussen Dahl, often known as J. C. Dahl or I. C. Dahl, was a Danish-Norwegian artist who is considered the first great romantic painter in Norway, the founder of the "golden age" of Norwegian painting, and, by some, one of the greatest European artists of all time. He is often described as "the father of Norwegian landscape painting" and is regarded as the first Norwegian painter to reach a level of artistic accomplishment comparable to that attained by the greatest European artists of his day.
