More about this artwork

Welcome to an exploration of Odilon Redon's striking lithograph, "The Charger," created in 1894. This compelling artwork captures the essence of a horse with a potent blend of movement and emotion. Redon, known for his unique blend of realism and symbolism, uses a starkly contrasting monochrome palette to dynamically present the horse's features. In this lithograph, the viewer is drawn towards the horse's expressive gaze, which is rendered with an incredible intensity. The deep, shadowed eye and the sharply outlined features of the muscle and mane convey a sense of raw, unbridled energy. Redon's adept use of light and dark not only accents the anatomy and form of the charger but also imbues the creature with a mystical or ephemeral quality. This powerful image is framed uniquely, with parts of the horse's head and mane cropped, suggesting that the horse is moving towards something beyond the viewer's sight. It hints at a narrative just outside the confines of the frame, leaving much to the imagination about the charger's destination or purpose."The Charger" is a testament to Redon's visionary approach to art, where every stroke is laden with potential for both visceral reaction and introspective reflection.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
