More about this artwork
Artist: Udo Keppler (1914)In this evocative painting by Udo Keppler, titled "Government and Business Enter Upon a New Era of Good Feeling," we witness a symbolic representation of harmony between two pivotal societal forces: government and business. The artwork, rich in symbolic imagery, depicts two robed figures standing atop a rugged, mountainous landscape under a twilight sky. The figure draped in a toga labeled 'Government' raises a torch towards the heavens, where the word 'CO-OPERATION' is spelled out among the stars, suggesting a celestial endorsement of their alliance. Opposite to him, the figure marked 'Business,' clad in a warmer, earth-toned robe, looks on, symbolizing the receptive and attentive stance of the business world towards governmental guidance and their mutual goal of cooperation. This painting not only captures a moment of ideological unity but also reflects historical contexts of the early 20th century, a time when the relationship between government and business was undergoing significant transformations. With the luminescent backdrop and the stark, almost solemn nature of the terrain, Keppler may also be hinting at the challenging path ahead, despite the apparent goodwill. The serene yet potent atmosphere created by the dimly lit sky and the quiet, solemn environment speaks volumes about the cautious optimism of the era. This painting holds relevance even today, reminding us of the enduring necessity of collaboration between governmental bodies and commercial entities to foster societal advancement.
