More about this artwork
The painting "The man behind the gun will settle this war" by Udo Keppler, created in 1898, provides a striking and vivid depiction that captures the spirit and intensity of the era. Centered in the composition is a robust figure, a U.S. Navy sailor, poised strongly with a determined gaze looking out towards the distance. His muscular build and intense expression underscore a sentiment of resolve and readiness. The sailor is accessorized in a typical white sailor outfit with a cap labeled "U.S. Navy," anchoring him securely within his military role. In his hands, he grips a sizable naval gun, representative of the technological advancements in military machinery at the time. The background hosts an American flag billowing in the breeze, juxtaposed with a maritime scene where ships can be seen with smoke billowing from their entities - likely indicative of a naval engagement. This artwork exemplifies Keppler’s ability to encapsulate not only the physicality but also the sentiment and patriotism prevalent during the Spanish-American War period. The title itself serves as a bold statement about the decisive role of military force, particularly the individual soldier’s role in the outcomes of national conflicts.
