More about this artwork
We are delighted to feature John Varley's evocative watercolor painting, "Castle," a serene depiction that beautifully captures the timeless grace of historical architecture juxtaposed with nature. This piece illustrates a majestic castle perched along the edge of a tranquil body of water, possibly a lake or river. The structure's formidable but worn walls and towers, rendered in soft hues of gray and blue, suggest a narrative of both enduring strength and graceful decline through ages. The distant background unfolds with gentle rolling hills, subtly shaded to draw the eye across the horizon, enhancing the depth and perspective of the scene. Clouds, light and wispy, float in the sky, casting shadows and contributing to the overall placid atmosphere. Varley's adept use of watercolors achieves a delicate balance between the castle's solid, enduring presence and the ethereal quality of the surrounding landscape.

He was the elder brother of a family of artists: Cornelius Varley, William Fleetwood Varley, and Elizabeth, who married the painter William Mulready.
