More about this artwork

Delve into the darker recesses of human nature with Odilon Redon's striking lithograph, "It Is the Devil, Bearing Beneath His Two Wings the Seven Deadly Sins." Created in 1888, this artwork invites viewers into a hauntingly introspective dialogue, channeling the psychological and metaphysical themes that Redon is renowned for.In this compelling piece, the figure of the devil is shrouded in shadow, symbolizing the pervasive and often unseen influence of sin. The figure's dominant presence fills the frame, with its two expansive wings enveloping the space. These wings are not just physical appendages but carriers of weighty significance, each fold whispering tales of humanity's vices. The stark monochromatic palette reinforces the somber and eerie mood, pushing us to confront our own shadows.Redon's adept use of light and dark enhances the mysterious and otherworldly atmosphere of the lithograph. His technique creates a texture that is almost tangible, as if one could feel the rough darkness. This tactile quality invites a deeper sensory connection to the work, making the contemplation of the seven deadly sins a personal journey for every viewer. This artwork is not merely a visual experience but a mirror reflecting back our own complexities and imperfections. It challenges us to acknowledge and scrutinize the darker parts of our psyche, a timeless reminder of art's power to provoke thought and stir the soul.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
