More about this artwork

"Low Tide at Villerville," painted by Charles François Daubigny in 1873, beautifully captures a serene maritime landscape from the northern coast of France. In this evocative work, Daubigny skillfully balances sky, sea, and land to reflect the tranquil mood of a beach at low tide. The painting enriches viewers with an expansive vista, where the horizon stretches wide under an impressive array of white and gray clouds that dominate the sky.The foreground is marked by lush greenery and rocks, dappling in shadow and sunlight, giving a vivid sense of depth. This natural unevenness leads the viewer's eye across a small stretch where the sea has receded, revealing the wet sands and pools left by the outgoing tide. Sails of small boats punctuate the distant waterline, they hint at human activity, yet blend peacefully into the scene without disturbance. On the grassy cliff, snippets of daily life can be glimpsed—a few figures, possibly local villagers, interact subtly within this natural setting. To the right, atop the cliff, modest houses and buildings are visible, painted with soft warm hues that catch the last light of day, suggesting the simplicity and quiet charm of rural French life during this period.By focusing on the calming qualities of the coastal environment and the harmonious interaction between humans and nature, Daubigny's painting invites a contemplative mood.
