More about this artwork

"Pegasus and Bellerophon" by Odilon Redon, created circa 1888, is a compelling work that vividly captures the mystical essence of the Greek mythological tale. In this charcoal drawing, Redon masterfully utilizes nuanced shades and textures to evoke an ethereal, dreamlike atmosphere. The artwork portrays the powerful figure of Pegasus, the majestic winged horse, joined by his rider Bellerophon. The composition is dominated by the bold, dark contrast of Pegasus’ expansive wings, which stretch upwards, merging almost hauntingly with the haziness of the backdrop. This not only accentuates the animal’s mystical quality but also infuses a sense of dynamism and motion into the scene.Bellerophon, presented in a subtle yet defined manner, clutches the reins tightly, his pose suggesting determination and focus. The interaction between Pegasus and Bellerophon depicts a moment of intense connection and mutual trust, central themes in their legendary adventures together.Odilon Redon's characteristic approach of blending realism with fantasy breathes life into this myth, inviting viewers to step into a timeless narrative woven from the threads of ancient lore and artistic imagination.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
