More about this artwork

Albert Edelfelt's evocative painting, "In The Drawing Room at Haikko, Study" from 1888, wonderfully captures a serene and intimate moment within an elegant drawing room. The scene features three women, each engaged in a genteel afternoon routine, beautifully framed by the airy luminosity and a picturesque view through the window. To the left, a woman in a delicate, light-toned dress stands pensively by a seated younger woman, who is absorbed in playing the piano. To the right, another woman, dressed in somber black, sits attentively, perhaps listening to the music or engaged in quiet contemplation.Edelfelt's brushwork, characterized by its fluidity and lightness, skillfully conveys the textures of their garments and the soft, diffuse light flooding the room. The expansive landscape seen through the window injects a sense of the world beyond – a lush, vibrant backdrop to this tranquil indoor setting. This painting not only illustrates Edelfelt's mastery of natural light and intimate portraiture but also serves as a window into the tranquil daily life of the Finnish upper class in the late 19th century.
