More about this artwork

"The Coming Storm" (1878) by George Inness captures a breathtaking moment of natural drama, accentuated by a profound sense of impending change. Set against a backdrop of a brooding sky, this evocative painting invites viewers to experience the serene yet suspenseful atmosphere prior to a storm. The scene is set in a lush landscape where the vibrant greenery and earthy tones of the countryside are meticulously painted to reflect a tranquil pastoral setting. In the foreground, a patchwork of fields dotted with grazing cattle underlines the peacefulness of rural life. The middle ground reveals clusters of dense trees that border the fields, adding depth and richness to the scene. However, the tranquility is juxtaposed with the dramatic, tumultuous sky above. Thick, heavy clouds dominate, rolling across the canvas with a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. A lighter patch of sky in the center serves as a visual and symbolic respite in the otherwise stormy heavens, hinting at nature’s fleeting moments of calm. This painting is not just a visual feast; it is an exploration of mood, atmosphere, and the imminent power of nature. Inness’s expert use of color and light subtly conveys the interplay between peace and turbulence, reflecting his keen perception of his surroundings and his ability to translate it into a compelling visual narrative.

George Inness (May 1, 1825 – August 3, 1894) was a prominent American landscape painter.

Now recognized as one of the most influential American artists of the nineteenth century, Inness was influenced by the Hudson River School at the start of his career. He also studied the Old Masters, and artists of the Barbizon school during later trips to Europe. There he was introduced to the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, which was significant for him; he expressed that spiritualism in the works of his maturity (1879–1894).
