More about this artwork

"Refugiés," a compelling piece by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, circa 1918, captures the somber realities of war-torn displacement. This artwork poignantly depicts a small family—likely a mother and her children—fleeing from the ravages of conflict. The figures are drawn with delicate yet expressive lines that convey both their vulnerability and resilience. The mother, central to the composition, stands protectively with her children, her face a portrait of both worry and determination. Clad in modest, worn clothing that suggests haste and hardship, the family carries minimal belongings; their whole life compressed into what they can carry. The child clinging to her leg looks on with an expression of apprehension, while the other child, slightly ahead, seems curious yet cautious about their uncertain future. In the background, a desolate landscape with destroyed buildings offers a stark testament to the devastation left behind. The soft sketches and subtle shading techniques used by Steinlen accentuate the emotional weight of the scene, inviting viewers to reflect on the human impact of war.Steinlen's work often delved into social issues, and "Refugiés" is a powerful example of his commitment to depicting the struggles of the less fortunate. This piece is not only a historical reflection on past conflicts but also a timeless reminder of the ongoing global challenges faced by refugees.

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker.

Born in Lausanne, Steinlen studied at the University of Lausanne before taking a job as a designer trainee at a textile mill in Mulhouse in eastern France. In his early twenties he was still developing his skills as a painter when he and his wife Emilie were encouraged by the painter François Bocion to move to the artistic community in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. Once there, Steinlen was befriended by the painter Adolphe Willette who introduced him to the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir that led to his commissions to do poster art for the cabaret owner/entertainer, Aristide Bruant and other commercial enterprises.
