More about this artwork

"The Drinking Pool (three women at water)" is a captivating 1894 oil painting by Edward Mitchell Bannister that gracefully immerses viewers in a serene, naturalistic scene. The composition focuses on three women gathered by a secluded water source enveloped by an idyllic wooded area. The central figure is prominently bending over, seemingly in the act of drawing water, her stance implying movement and purpose. Her rustic attire and the earthy tones of her surroundings further reinforce the painting's pastoral mood.To her left, another woman stands upright, gazing directly at something beyond the frame, creating an intriguing sense of interaction with her environment or unseen others. The third figure, smaller and slightly obscured in the background, adds depth to the scene, inviting viewers to contemplate her role and relation to the other two women. The dappling light and textured brushwork throughout the painting enhance the sense of a fleeting, tranquil moment, beautifully capturing the interplay of light, shadow, and nature. Bannister’s skillful use of color and form not only conveys the physical beauty of the scene but also evokes a feeling of peacefulness and simplicity, characteristic of his work.
