More about this artwork
"Has She Got Him at Last?" is a compelling caricature by artist Udo Keppler, created in 1899. This piece is rich in symbolic detail and political commentary, reflecting the era's complex socio-political atmosphere. The painting features a man suspended in the air, clenching a wooden post marked "UNITED STATES SENATE." He appears distressed, reaching out desperately. Notably, he is being gripped by a large figure labeled "JUSTICE," wrapping around the post in the form of a sash. With one end reading "JURY," this representation suggests the intertwined nature of judicial processes and legislative functions. In the background, the U.S. Capitol Building is visible, anchoring the scene in Washington, D.C., and underpinning the political undertones of the artwork. The discarded top hat on the ground, labeled "QUAY," further personalizes the critique, likely referring to a specific political figure or situation pertinent to that time.Keppler's work is a vivid example of political satire from the period, using humor and exaggeration to comment on and critique political figures and their relationships with justice and legislative bodies.
