More about this artwork
"Dreams (Dolce Far Niente)," a captivating painting by Jozef Israëls, evokes a profound sense of tranquility and reflective introspection. This artwork shows a young woman lying leisurely by the seashore, her body relaxed, with her head resting comfortably on her folded arms. Clad in a golden blouse and contrasting red skirt, she gazes peacefully towards the horizon where the calming blues of the ocean meet the subtle hues of a sunset sky.Israëls masterfully uses light and color to bring alive the serene atmosphere. The shimmering reflections on the water and the soft gradients of the sky contribute to the overall sense of calm. Grasses gently sway in the breeze at the edge of the shore, enhancing the feeling of quiet solitude. In "Dreams," Israëls not only captures a moment of idle repose but also invites viewers to ponder the peaceful simplicity of being in harmony with one’s surroundings.

Jozef Israëls was a Dutch painter. He was a leading member of the group of landscape painters referred to as the Hague School and, during his lifetime, "the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century".
He was born in Groningen, of Jewish parents. His father, Hartog Abraham Israëls, intended for him to be a businessman, and it was only after a determined struggle that he was allowed to embark on an artistic career. He studied initially from 1835 to 1842 at the Minerva Academy in his home town Groningen.
