More about this artwork

"Mutter" (circa 1922) by Karl Wiener exhibits a striking and emotionally charged portrayal of motherhood, encapsulated through a compelling interplay of colors and textures. This painting presents two figures, a mother and her child, enveloped in a dark, textured backdrop that could symbolize the complexities and challenges of life. The mother, with her pronounced facial features and a halo-like aura around her head, suggests a saintly or protective character, emphasizing the reverence and sacred nature of motherhood. Her gaze, layered with depth and introspection, meets the viewer, drawing them into the profound bond she shares with the child beside her. The child, depicted with simpler yet equally expressive features, appears comforted and secure in the mother's presence. The color palette is subdued with deep blues and greens, contrasted sharply by the warm tones of the faces and the golden halo, highlighting the figures as the focal point amidst the chaos of the surrounding lines. These swirling, scribble-like textures add a dynamic element to the piece, perhaps symbolizing the turbulence and perpetual motion of life around the serene bond shared by mother and child.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
