More about this artwork

"Et le chercheur était à la recherche infinie" — "And the Searcher was Engaged in an Infinite Search" (1886) by Odilon Redon beautifully captures the essence of introspection and the perpetual pursuit of knowledge. This enchanting lithograph, a part of Redon's "noirs" series, delves into the mysterious and the unseen aspects of the human psyche. In this deeply evocative piece, we observe a haunting figure partially obscured by darkness, gazing intently into a luminous bowl. The figure's face, distinctly pale and drawn with fine, expressive lines, contrasts sharply with the surrounding shadowy environment. This spectral entity seems to be seeking answers or revelations in the glowing contents of the bowl. The setting, a dimly lit room or perhaps an archway, adds to the atmosphere of solitude and contemplation. The texture and intricate details in the stonework around the figure suggest a fusion of the real and the imaginative—a hallmark of Redon's work, where the boundary between the two often blurs.Redon's masterful use of light and shadow not only highlights the central elements but also imbues the composition with a sense of depth and mystery, compelling the viewer to ponder what lies beyond the tangible.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
