More about this artwork
"Seeing the Old Year Out (1905)" is a captivating illustration by American artist Udo Keppler, which beautifully encapsulates the transition from one year to the next. The painting displays a gathering of men, most likely political figures, exhibiting various expressions of concern and reflection. They are seated around a dining table adorned with pink flowers and half-empty glasses, seemingly in the middle of a banquet. In the left background, a window shows the symbolic representation of the New Year: a stork delivering a baby labeled "1906," signifying new beginnings and possibilities. In stark contrast, depicted humorously exiting through the same window, is an old man with a beard, representing the outgoing year 1905, emblematic of past times and experiences leaving to make way for the new.The clock on the mantel striking midnight and the festive decorations suggest the scene is set on New Year's Eve. These visual elements, together with the detailed and emotive caricatures of the men, skillfully illustrate the theme of time's passage and the yearly renewal of hope and expectations.
